Welcome
Welcome to sarposhartgallery, a cherished mother-daughter enterprise born from a passion for heritage and artistry. Our venture is deeply rooted in the colourful and authentic world of Pashmina shawls, a craft handed down through generations, inspired by the vision of a showroom once owned by my grandfather.
Located in the vibrant city of London, our creations are infused with the soul of Kashmir. The rich history of Pashmina shawl craftsmanship in the region dates back to the 15th century, flourishing under the patronage of Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin. Originally reserved for royalty and the elite to symbolize their status, these exquisite shawls are now accessible to a diverse clientele through our collection.
Pashmina wool, also known as Lena Cashmere, is sourced from the Changra goats that dwell in the high altitudes of Ladakh and neighbouring Tibet. These goats are equipped with a thick undercoat that shields them from the harsh winter cold. Our wool is harvested sustainably; the goats are gently combed by hand each spring, ensuring the integrity of the delicate fibres, which are as fine as 12-14 microns in diameter.
This wool is then transported across mountain passes to the Kashmir Valley, the only place with the skilled artisans capable of transforming these raw fibres into luxurious, soft shawls. Our artisans, predominantly women, are masters of their craft, having inherited centuries-old spinning techniques. They meticulously sort, clean, and spin the wool by hand, preserving an art form that has withstood the pressures of modern mechanization, political strife, and economic challenges. These artisans are not just skilled workers; they are the unsung heroines of the Kashmir Valley. Their resilience and dedication to the craft provide them with a sense of hope and strength, allowing them to dream of a brighter future despite the adversities they face daily. At sarposhartgallery, we celebrate these remarkable artisans and their enduring spirit. Discover the beauty and luxury of our Pashmina shawls, each piece a testament to the artistry and resilience of Kashmir.
